LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant men's soccer could not overcome a two-goal first-half deficit, falling 3-1 to Sewanee at Scotland Yard on Tuesday evening.
Cooper Rumley, a junior from Sugar Hill, Ga., however, did record his first collegiate goal in this one, putting one home on a header in the 84th minute to put Covenant (0-5-0) on the board late.
The Tigers (3-1-1) began pushing the pace early, putting two shots on net in the first 11:17, but keeper
J.T. Tolson stopped both shots to keep it even. After another shot on frame in the 18th minute, they finally got one to go in the 20th minute on a free run by Thomas McGowan.
The defense held for the next 12:25, and
Henry Parker tried to tie it with a shot in the 30th minute, but could not punch it in. Following that period, the Tigers got another shot past the defense in the 32nd minute, off the foot of Isaac Rasheed.
Ian Adams had one final chance in the half, firing one from outside the 18', but did not find a goal, as the half ended 2-0 in favor of Sewanee.
Tolson and the defense went back to work in the second half, as Tolson made another pair of saves and the defense blocked two shots. In between those chances,
Carter Weekley gained an opportunity and sent a ball toward the top right corner, but Sewanee keeper Reid Gunzenhauser got a fingertip on the ball to keep it out.
The final goal for the Tigers came in the 71st minute, as Brady Lloyd scored to make it 3-0. The Scots then generated shots from Parker and
Jackson Bostrom, both of which came up empty. However, a late corner kick from
Isaiah Harper found Rumley, who pushed the ball to the open right side for his first career goal.
That would be the final chance, though, as the final 6:55 went by quietly for both sides.
Tolson set a career-best once again with nine saves in the match, while for the Tigers, Jonah Cooker and Holden Patterson recorded assists.
