SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Covenant women's soccer got a career-high-tying 12 saves from senior keeper
Bronwyn Kickasola, but a lone goal slipped through for Sewanee to down the Scots 1-0 in the season opener.
AnnaLi Weekley led the offensive charge with two shots on goal, with
Abby Eastes and
Tess Duble adding one apiece. Defensively,
Autumn Biancamano and
AT Simon played all 90 minutes for the Scots (0-1-0).
The Tigers (1-0-0) were the first to fire away, getting three shots off, including two on net, in the first 6:16. Kickasola, however, saved both attempts to keep it scoreless. The senior keeper would add two more saves in the subsequent 9:34 of play before
Lila Wiley fired the Scots' first shot at 16:25.
At the 21:30 mark, Covenant got their first chance, getting a throw-in deep in Tiger territory and allowing Duble a chance on net, but Sewanee keeper Emilee Scott kept it from going in. Kickasola tacked on another pair of saves in the remainder of the half, maintaining the 0-0 score at halftime.
Weekley got things going just 39 second into the second half, but another save by Scott prevented Covenant from taking the lead. Kickasola and the defense went back to work for the next 13:15, with Kickasola saving three more Tiger attempts.
Weekley tried again to untie the score in the 60th minute, but Scott was there again, earning another save to put the onus back on the Scots defense. Sewanee's attack earned them three more shots in a 2:37 span, but Kickasola stopped two more. The Tigers then broke through with Katye Dullye's 79th minute goal to make it 1-0.
Kickasola tacked on one more save in the final stretch, but the offense could not generate any more chances in the Sewanee zone the rest of the match.
Scott made four total saves for the Tigers, while Laney Kalsu and Stella Martin played all 90 minutes.
