TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. -- Covenant baseball faltered twice in the late innings at Toccoa Falls on Friday, falling 8-3 and 8-6 in their series-opening doubleheader with the Screaming Eagles.
GAME ONE: Toccoa Falls 8, Covenant 3
A five-run bottom of the sixth for Toccoa Falls was too much for the Scots to overcome, as the Scots lost 8-3 in game one.
Roby McClarnon had a pair of hits, while
Drew Avant and
Elliott Eastin added RBIs.
Jake Schock (1-1) was solid in his five innings of work, giving up just three runs and striking out four.Â
After a scoreless two and a half innings, Toccoa Falls got on the board in the bottom of the third with a run, only to see Covenant counter with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
However, the Screaming Eagles would score seven runs in the next two frames to put the game out of reach.
Peyton Powell had a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Drew Ellsworth threw six innings of two-run ball to earn the win.
GAME TWO: Toccoa Falls 8, Covenant 6
Another five-run sixth inning for the Screaming Eagles was enough as Covenant could not manufacture a comeback effort in the seventh, falling 8-6 in game two.
Daniel Bell and
Jonathan Ponder had a pair of hits each in this one, while
Sam Cecil and
Ezra Finton drew two walks apiece, with Finton scoring two runs.
Covenant was the first to strike this time, as they scored five runs by the end of the third inning to go ahead 5-0.Â
Following a three-run rally by the Screaming Eagles in the fourth, the Scots were able to tack on another run in the top of the sixth to go up 6-3.Â
However, Toccoa Falls' offense struck again in the bottom of the sixth, as they put together their second five-run sixth of the day to pull ahead late.Â
Brady Daniell (1-3) was handed the loss for Covenant, while Hunter Tatum got the win and Luke Pruitt the save for Toccoa Falls.
