Softball Upended Twice in Demorest

DEMOREST, Ga. -- Covenant softball was upended twice by Piedmont in Demorest on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-1 and 6-5 at The WAC.

GAME ONE: Piedmont 4, Covenant 1

The Scots could not muster much against a tough Piedmont pitching staff, falling 4-1 in game one.

Gracie Lacle went 2-for-2 with a walk to headline the offense, while Lexi Tincknell brought in the lone RBI. Charley Clark (3-15) allowed just one earned run in her six innings of work, striking out one.

Trailing 4-0 entering the seventh, Covenant began to put a rally together, as Cailey Barnett singled with one out and then Tincknell doubled her in with two outs. Kallie Branum then followed with a pinch-hit single, but Tincknell got caught in a rundown at third, eventually being tagged for the final out.

Valerie Bailey went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, with Taylor Spivey (8-7) earning the win and Jalyn McGee (SV, 3) picking up a two-inning save.

GAME TWO: Piedmont 6, Covenant 5

Trailing 6-2 after four innings, the Scots were able to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base with two outs, but could not score them in a 6-5 loss.

Julie Mavity had a pair of hits and RBIs on the day, while Cailey Barnett, Lily Campbell, and Elizabeth Yother also added two hits each. Yother (10-9) struck out three in her six innings.

Down 3-0 entering the second frame, Yother helped herself out by singling in Barnett to trim it down to 3-1, and then Lacle singled in another to make it 3-2.

The Lions (22-14, 9-5 CCS) countered with three more runs between the fourth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 6-2, but Covenant (14-24, 5-9 CCS) responded in the late innings, getting a two-RBI single from Mavity and another RBI single from Yother, but Piedmont was able to get the final out to hold on.

Maddi Spieks and Sarah Green had two hits each for the Lions, while Maile Dunn (3-2) earned the win and Jalyn McGee (SV, 4) got her second save of the day iwth 1.1 innings of relief.
