MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Covenant softball fell twice at Maryville on Friday evening, 9-3 and 2-1, but got enough help from other CCS scores to clinch a berth in the CCS Tournament.
With Belhaven's sweep of Asbury and Covenant's win over LaGrange earlier this season, the Scots (14-26, 5-11 CCS) earned the tiebreaker and the sixth seed.
GAME ONE: Maryville 9, Covenant 3
Covenant put together nine hits, but only strung together three runs as Maryville outscored them 9-3 in game one.
Cailey Barnett and
Charley Clark had a pair of hits apiece, while
Lily Campbell,
Cassidi Phillips and
Madison Taylor had an RBI each.
Following an early 6-0 deficit, Covenant got on the board in the fourth inning on Campbell's RBI groundout and Phillips' RBI single to make it 6-2.
Maryville countered with two more runs in the fifth, but
Madison Taylor brought in a third Covenant run in the sixth inning to bring it back to 8-3.
That would be all, though, as Maryville tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth to create a gap Covenant could not overcome.
Catie Zani went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Maryville, while Tia Stewart (11-6) earned the win in the circle.
Charley Clark (3-15) was handed the loss.
GAME TWO: Maryville 2, Covenant 1 (8 innings)
A low-scoring affair for game two went Maryville's way, as Covenant fell 2-1 in extra innings.
Julie Mavity had a pair of hits to headline the offense, and
Lexi Tincknell scored the lone run for Covenant.
Elizabeth Yother (10-10) struck out five in her 7.2 innings of work.
Neither team was able to get a run on the board in the first three innings, but Maryville finally broke through with a run in the fourth on an RBI single to go up 1-0.
Covenant had a chance to tie it in the sixth, but the tying run was tagged out at home after a pitch got away. In the seventh, though, they got the job done, as another wild pitch got far enough away for
Lexi Tincknell to score the tying run.
However, in the eighth, Maryville's Watiyeli Taylor (1-0) fired a shutout top of the eighth, and then Maryville got a walk-off RBI triple in the bottom of the inning to close it out.
