Softball Splits Low-Scoring Doubleheader With Wolves

MACON, Ga. -- Covenant softball split a pair of low-scoring affairs with Wesleyan on Friday afternoon, falling 2-1 in game one and then responding to win 2-0 in game two.

GAME TWO: Covenant 2, Wesleyan 0

Cailey Barnett's two-RBI triple in the fourth inning proved to be the difference as Covenant got a bounceback 2-0 win in game two.

Lily Campbell had a three hit day with a run scored, while Barnett had two hits and the two RBIs for the Scots' (14-22, 5-7 CCS) offense. Elizabeth Yother (10-8) pitched her second career shutout, striking out eight.

Both teams were able to hold each other scoreless early on, with neither team able to put more than one runner on per inning.

The changed in the fourth.

A one-out single by Campbell and a Wolves (5-27, 1-12 CCS) error put two on with two out, and then Barnett did her part, tripling to left field to score both runners and put Covenant up 2-0.

Yother did the rest, including working out of a pair of jams in the late innings to preserve her shutout bid.

Savannah Wren (0-5) was handed the loss but tossed five solid innings, striking out two.

GAME ONE: Wesleyan 2, Covenant 1

Covenant could not overcome an early 2-0 deficit, falling 2-1 in game one.

Gracie Lacle, Cassidi Phillips, and Kallie Branum had two hits each for the Scots, while Megan Porras drove in the lone run. Charley Clark (3-13) struck out five in her six innings of work.

The Wolves were able to strike early with two runs in the first inning on an RBI double and an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.

Covenant generated a rally in the second to try and answer, getting three straight singles, including Porras' RBI single, to make it 2-1. However, Wesleyan was able to retire the rest without the tying or go-ahead run scoring.

The tying run did get to third base in the seventh, but the Scots could not bring it across, as the Wolves were able to escape with the win.

Kaylee Oliver got the win in the circle, while Taylor Laviano and Sydnee McElveen had two hits each for Wesleyan.
