Finton's Walk-Off Sac Fly Wins Series For Baseball

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant baseball's comeback in the ninth, capped by Ezra Finton's walk-off sacrifice fly, gave the Scots the final series win as CCS foes with Maryville on Saturday afternoon at the Covenant baseball field.

But, this was not just a special win for the team, but for the four players graduating at the end of this season: Kyle Livengood, David Lovell, Marcus Kinch, and Jack Greene.

GAME TWO: Covenant 9, Maryville 8

A comeback effort in the late innings was successful for Covenant as they scored two in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with a 9-8 win against Maryville in game two.

Five Covenant Scots (14-21, 6-12 CCS) recorded two hits: Daniel Bell, Roby McClarnon, Ezra Finton, Sam Cecil, and the graduating Kyle Livengood. Brady Daniell (1-1) picked up the win with 2.2 innings of one-run ball in relief.

Covenant drew first blood in this back-and-forth affair, getting an RBI single from Daniel Counts and an RBI groundout from Elliott Eastin to go up 2-0.

Starter Jake Schock hung in for his four innings, allowing just one earned run, but Maryville (23-14, 7-8 CCS) was able to take a 3-2 lead in the second thanks to a pair of Covenant errors.

Livengood put his fingerprint on the game with his fourth-inning RBI single to tie it again at three, but Maryville clapped right back in the fifth with a two-RBI double to go back ahead 5-3.

Bell then doubled in a run of his own in the sixth frame, but Maryville dropped two more in the seventh to create a 7-4 advantage.

That all changed in the bottom of the seventh, as Finton and Cecil went back-to-back over the fence to knot things up once again.

Maryville put together one last gasp, though, getting a key RBI single with two outs to re-assume the lead, 8-7, and brought in their closer, Xavier Resto (3-3), to try and shut the door.

Covenant, however, didn't let him shut it.

After a scoreless eighth, Resto returned to the hill for the ninth, but greeted Counts with a leadoff hit-by-pitch. Drew Avant followed with a single to right to put the tying and winning runs on with nobody out.

Elliott Eastin then hit a perfect weak grounder to the right side to move the runners up 90 feet, and then a wild pitch advanced the tying run home and the winning run to third. Finton then got a pitch he liked on a full count and sent it to deep left, plenty deep enough to bring in that precious winning run.

Logan Krause went 3-for-4, while Luke Winter had two hits and three RBIs to pace the Maryville offense.

GAME ONE: Maryville 23, Covenant 2 (7 innings)

A pair of huge innings for Maryville put them ahead at an insurmountable distance, as Covenant fell by a 23-2 run-rule score.

Daniel Counts went deep for his CCS-leading eighth homer of the season, while Jonathan Ponder added a pair of knocks.

Counts started the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first, but Maryville responded with 10 runs in the second inning to chase starter Adkin Finch (3-5).

Counts hit his solo shot in the third inning to score a second run, but it was all Maryville from there, as they added nine more in the fifth to complete their 23-run outburst.

Kaden Wimsatt (4-3) got the win in a complete game effort, while Brayden Evans, Logan Krause, Frank Derner, and Jay Pichardo combined for 15 hits and 16 RBIs.

Zach Williamson and Christian Vander Veen were relief bright spots for Covenant, firing the final 2.2 innings in scoreless fashion and combining for four strikeouts.
