LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant baseball controlled the game early and stymied the powerful Maryville offense for the final eight innings to take a series-opening 9-3 win at the Covenant Baseball Field on Friday afternoon.
Roby McClarnon and
Elliott Eastin had three-hit days, while
Daniel Counts,
Sam Cecil,
Ezra Finton, and
Kyle Livengood had two hits each, with Counts homering and McClarnon collecting a double and a triple.
James Lee and
Jonathan Glover (4-2) combined to allow three runs, combining for seven strikeouts.
Following a run by Maryville in the top of the first, Counts clapped right back with a two-run shot to left center to take a 2-1 lead. Both offenses were then held scoreless for the next two and a half innings.
Covenant then put their foot down.
With two outs and nobody on, Counts, Eastin, and
Luke Carter hit three straight singles to bring in the go-ahead run, and then after a Cecil walk, Finton brought in a second run with his infield single. Livengood then got in on the fun with his two-RBI single, and then
Drew Avant singled in the sixth run of the inning to make it 8-1.
Following that incredible two-out rally in the fifth, the Scots were able to tack on a ninth run in the sixth on Eastin's RBI single, putting Covenant ahead by eight.
Glover did the rest, getting key outs when needed to hold off any significant Maryville Scot rallies in the late stages to get his fourth win of the campaign.
Brayden Evans had two hits, while Luke Wright had the lone RBI for Maryville. Kyle Timko (5-3) got the loss for Maryville's Scots.Â
