Lacle's Walk-Off Single Gives Softball Doubleheader Split

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Gracie Lacle's walk-off single in game two gave Covenant softball a doubleheader split with Johnson & Wales - Charlotte on Friday, winning game two 6-5 and falling 7-5 in game one.

GAME TWO: Covenant 6, Johnson & Wales 5

Gracie Lacle's two-out single to left center brought home Myla Still from third to give the Scots a 6-5 game two win.

Lacle collected four hits in five tries in the game overall, while Charley Clark added two hits. Elizabeth Yother (9-7) earned the win, striking out nine in her complete game effort.

Just like in game one, Covenant (13-19) jumped ahead first in the first inning, as a Cassidi Phillips two-RBI double and a passed ball allowed the Scots to put up a three-spot.

The Wildcats (6-22) answered in the third with a two-run frame, but Cailey Barnett got one back in the bottom of the third with her sacrifice fly.

Johnson & Wales was not done, though, as a two-RBI triple and a wild pitch gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game, 5-4.

The Wildcats' pitching kept the Scots off the scoreboard until the seventh, as a throwing error put Barnett on as the tying run, and she came around to score on Kallie Branum's pinch-hit RBI single.

With two outs, Lacle stepped to the dish with pinch-runner Myla Still at third, and on a 2-0 pitch, sliced one perfectly the other way, dropping in left center to give Covenant the walk-off win.

Addison Laney and Seven Hope had two hits each for Johnson & Wales, while Mai Tellez-Martinez (5-9) got the loss.

GAME ONE: Johnson & Wales 7, Covenant 5

An early 3-0 lead did not last as Johnson & Wales came back and held on for a 7-5 win in game one.

Julie Mavity had a pair of hits to lead the offense, while Kallie Branum led in RBIs with two. Charley Clark (3-12) struck out a career-best 11 batters in a stellar effort.

In the first, Cassidi Phillips brought home the first run on a sacrifice fly, followed up by Branum's RBI single and an error by the Wildcats to make it 3-0.

Clark kept Johnson & Wales at bay for the first three innings, but in the fourth, the Wildcats assembled a three-run rally off of Julie Mavity in relief to tie it, forcing Clark to re-enter.

Branum brought in a go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3, but Johnson & Wales was able to score three between the fifth and sixth innings to take a two-run lead.

A wild pitch by the Wildcats did bring in Clark from third to cut it to a one-run game going into the seventh, however, a solo homer by Mai Tellez-Martinez gave Johnson & Wales all the insurance they would need, as they closed the door in the bottom of the frame.

Kaydence Harrell had an impressive 3-for-4 day at the plate for the Wildcats, with all three hits being extra-base hits, while Tellez-Martinez (5-8) got the win with a complete-game effort.
