LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant baseball was swept in their Monday doubleheader by Ohio Wesleyan, falling 6-2 and 11-0 at the Covenant baseball field.
GAME ONE: Ohio Wesleyan 6, Covenant 2 (7 innings)
A five-run first inning by the Battling Bishops was enough as the Scots could not overcome that deficit, losing 6-2 in game one.
Ryan MacLellan and
Sam Cecil recorded two base knocks apiece to lead the offense, while
Ezra Finton took the team home run lead with his fourth in the late stages.
After a five-run, no-hit inning for Ohio Wesleyan in the top of the first, MacLellan tried to respond with an RBI triple to right field, scoring
Elliott Eastin to get Covenant on the board.
However, Zane Vitense (1-1) was dialed in from there, allowing no more runs over his final two innings. Marcus Suwinski picked up his second save of the season by firing three one-run frames to close it out.
That one run, though, came on the first pitch of the ninth, when Finton saw a pitch he liked and popped it over the left field wall for his fourth homer of the campaign. That along with a highlight reel-worthy double playÂ
Ethan Goebert (0-2) was handed the loss, but threw four brilliant innings after a rough first frame, picking up seven strikeouts overall.
GAME TWO: Ohio Wesleyan 11, Covenant 0 (8 innings)
The Scots were held to just five hits in a run-rule shortened, 11-0 loss in game two.
Elliott Eastin was the main offensive driver in this game, going 2-for-3.
Sam Cecil and
Matthew Ianniello also reached base on a pair of occasions, with each recording a hit and a walk.
The Battling Bishops got on the board in the first inning again in game two and did not look back, hitting two homers and getting several two-out knocks to run away with the game.
Adkin Finch (2-1) got the start and after a long first frame, settled in for three solid innings thereafter, picking up a strikeout.
Henry Isaacs went 4-for-5 at the plate in game two with three RBIs, while freshman catcher Nik Hilton hit his first collegiate homer as well for Ohio Wesleyan.
