WILMORE, Ky. -- Covenant baseball overcame an 11-6 deficit in the late stages with six unanswered runs to open CCS play with a 12-11 extra-inning victory at Cecil Zwifel Field in Wilmore on Friday afternoon.
Roby McClarnon went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs to head up the offense, while
Ryan MacLellan added a homer of his own, and
Daniel Counts,
Cole Akins and
Ezra Finton contributed three-hit games as well.
On a windy day in Wilmore, both offenses got going early, with Counts starting his day with an RBI single in the first inning to put the Scots up 1-0. The Eagles clapped back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, however, on a pair of homers.
Trailing 3-1 in the second, Covenant's offense began humming, scoring a run in each of the next five innings, with three of them scoring via RBI doubles from MacLellan, Finton, and
Sam Cecil, retaking a 6-3 lead.
However, the Asbury offense exploded in their half of the sixth, dropping an eight-spot on the Scots to go back up 10-6.
Fortunately, Covenant had one final push left in them.
In the top of the seventh, MacLellan and McClarnon went back-to-back with two outs to make it a one-run game, and then a defensive miscue by the Eagles allowed the tying run to score in the eighth.Â
As extras arrived, McClarnon was the leadoff man, and made good of it, homering again to right center to untie the score.
Jonathan Glover (2-1) did the rest, completing his win with a scoreless bottom of the 10th.
Edison Burke went 3-for-5 at the top of the order with a pair of RBIs to lead the Asbury offense, and Wesley Stewart (0-2) was handed the loss in relief.Â
