Mavity's Go-Ahead RBI Double Helps Softball Split Doubleheader

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Covenant softball got a go-ahead RBI double from Julie Mavity in the seventh inning of game two to earn a doubleheader split with Salem, losing game one 4-3 in extras before winning game two 4-3.

GAME TWO: Covenant 4, Salem 3

Julie Mavity doubled home the eventual game-winning run and Elizabeth Yother shut the door after a one-out triple to give Covenant a 4-3 win in game two.

Lily Campbell had a day at the eight spot in the order, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while five others added hits: Mavity, Madison Taylor, Cassidi Phillips, Gracie Lacle, and Megan Porras. Yother (4-4) scattered 10 hits and three runs in a complete-game effort, striking out eight.

The Spirits scored the first runs of the game in the first frame, as a double and a single made it 2-0. However, the Scots answered with a three-run fourth, getting an RBI hit-by-pitch from Porras and a two-RBI single from Campbell to go up 3-2.

Salem, though, came back and tied it in the sixth with an RBI single.

Then Mavity made her mark.

After a leadoff single from Campbell and a sacrifice bunt from Myla Still, Mavity laced a double, bringing Campbell home.

Yother did the rest, recording a strikeout and a fly out after a one-out triple out the tying run at third.

Morgan Lawson was an offensive pillar for the Spirits, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Chloe Bailey-Bonomo (1-2) got the loss.

GAME TWO: Salem 4, Covenant 3 (8 innings)

In a pitcher's duel, Salem came out on top with a walk-off homer in extras to win 4-3 in game one.

Madison Taylor drove in all three runs for the Scots, going 2-for-3, while Julie Mavity and Gracie Lacle added two hits apiece as well. Charley Clark (3-6) struck out eight over 7.1 innings of work, allowing three earned runs.

Clark kept Salem off the board for the first five innings, allowing Taylor to single home Lacle to give Covenant the lead. However, Morgan Lawson tied it up in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot.

After a scoreless seventh, Taylor gave the Scots the lead again in extras with her two-RBI sacrifice fly, but Salem scored three in the bottom of the inning to get the win.

Madison Talley (1-2) gained the win for Salem, while Morgan Lawson went 2-for-3 with a homer.
