Softball Opens Conference Slate WIth Doubleheader Sweep

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant softball opened their CCS slate with a doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott, 11-3, and 6-2, at the Covenant Softball Field on Thursday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Covenant 11, Agnes Scott 3 (5 innings)

A five-run fifth inning helped the Scots walk it off via run-rule, 11-3, in game one.

Covenant erupted for 15 hits in this game, including five triples. Julie Mavity went 4-for-4 in the leadoff spot with a pair of triples and four runs scored, while Lily Campbell added a triple of her own and Gracie Lacle had two triples and two RBIs. Charley Clark also contributed a 3-for-3 day at the plate.

The Scots put up a three-spot to open the game in the bottom of the first, getting a sacrifice fly from Megan Porras, an RBI single from Clark, and an RBI single from catcher Bri Tyson.

However, the Scotties countered in the top of the second when a miscue defensively on a two-run triple allowed the tying run to score.

It was all Scots from there.

Cassidi Phillips drilled an RBI single in the bottom of the second, Lacle tripled home a run in the third, and then Cassidi Phillips' sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 6-3 Covenant.

In the fifth, Clark doubled to left center to lead off the frame, and then Campbell and Lacle followed with back-to-back triples to make it 8-3. Kallie Branum continued the inning with an RBI double, and then Mavity's RBI triple and Madison Taylor's walk-off RBI double down the line ended the game.

Clark (3-4) notched the win in the circle, firing all five innings with a strikeout, while Bryn Greenwood (1-1) was handed the loss.

GAME TWO: Covenant 6, Agnes Scott 2

The Scots overcame a 2-0 deficit with six unanswered runs, while Elizabeth Yother navigated out of trouble in the circle multiple times to earn a 6-2 win in game two.

Kallie Branum posted a 2-for-3 day at the dish to help power the offense, while Julie Mavity, Madison Taylor, Emma Baltzersen, Charley Clark, Megan Porras, Lily Campbell, and Gracie Lacle added a hit each.

After going down 2-0 in the first on a two-out two-RBI double, it was up to the offense to bring home some runs.

They brought 'em home.

In the bottom of the second inning, Porras doubled home the first run, and then Lacle's walk and Mavity's single tied it up at two. Back-to-back walks by Taylor and Cassidi Phillips brough home the eventual winning run, and then Branum topped off the scoring with her RBI single.

Both pitchers held their respective opponents scoreless for the next three innings, with Yother working around a pair of jams, getting some help from batterymate Lexi Tincknell's heads-up double play in the fifth.

In the sixth, Baltzersen, pinch-hitting, doubled in Taylor for the Scots' sixth run, and then Yother closed the door in the seventh, allowing just one hit.

Yother (3-4) scattered 11 hits and two runs over her seven innings of work, striking out three to gain the win. Kyra Hornsby (0-2) was handed the loss. Ellie Settle led the Agnes Scott offense with a 3-for-4, two-RBI game two.
