SEWANEE, Tenn -- Covenant softball fell in two close games at their midweek doubleheader with Sewanee on Wednesday, with both games ending in 7-6 scores.
GAME ONE: Sewanee 7, Covenant 6
The Scots could not hold off the Sewanee offense in the late stages, falling 7-6 in game one.
Nine of a possible 10 players that got at-bats recorded at least one hit for Covenant, led by
Tisha Holland's two knocks.
Elizabeth Yother (7-5) struck out six in her 3.2 innings of relief.
After the Tigers scored a pair of runs in the first frame,
Madison Taylor tied it up in the third with her two-RBI triple, and
Megan Porras gave the Scots the lead in that same inning on her sacrifice fly.
Sewanee countered with the tying run in the bottom of the third, but in the fourth, Covenant put up three runs, one on a
Gracie Lacle RBI hit-by-pitch, one on a Taylor sacrifice fly, and one on an error by Sewanee, to go up 6-3.
However, the Tigers were able to gradually work their way back into it, scoring runs in each of the fifth, sixth, and the walk-off run in the seventh to win it.
Maggie Barker went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to pace the Sewanee offense, with pitcher Reagan Huskey driving in the winning run. Ansley Giffin (1-0) earned the win in relief.
GAME TWO: Sewanee 7, Covenant 6
The Covenant bullpen could not hold a 6-1 lead in the seventh, as the Tigers came back to walk it off again in game two, 7-6.
Julie Mavity,
Madison Taylor,
Cassidi Phillips, and
Charley Clark had multi-hit efforts, with Phillips leading the way with a trio of knocks.Â
The Scots jumped out early in game two, scoring three runs between the first and third frames on RBI singles from Clark and
Lexi Tincknell, and a steal of home from Phillips.
The Tigers answered with a solo homer in the fifth, but Covenant tacked on three in the top of the sixth thanks to a
Bekah Diener RBI sacrifice bunt, an RBI groundout from
Myla Still, and a
Madison Taylor RBI triple, making it 6-1.
Unfortunately, Sewanee was able to come through in the late stages once again, scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh, with Maggie Barker singling home the winning run.
Ansley Giffin had three hits to lead the Tiger offense, with Reagan Huskey (7-6) getting the win in relief.
Elizabeth Yother (7-6) was handed the loss in relief.
