ATLANTA, Ga. -- Covenant men's tennis traveled to Atlanta to take on No. 8 Emory and Berry on Saturday. The Scots battled, but were unable to keep up with the firepower of their two opponents as they lost the matches 6-1 and 4-3.
MATCH ONE: No. 8 Emory 6, Covenant 1
Covenant traveled to Emory to take on the number eight team in the country in match one of a doubleheader. The Scots battled, but were unable to keep up with the Eagles' firepower as they lost the match 6-1.
Emory started off strong in doubles as opened with a win at number three doubles as Ajay Kartik and John Lasanajak beat Jacob Eldridge and Cameron Erb 6-2.
The Eagles clinched the doubles point as Dean Kamenev and Stefan Karatosic grabbed a late break to defeat Graham Hayes and Brock Boehling 6-3 at number two doubles.
Despite having already lost the doubles point, the Scots were able to pick up an impressive 6-3 win at number one doubles as Ben Onufrock and Caleb Domkowski beat Matthew Johnstone and Daniel Kim. Emory extended their lead as Joshua Lai defeated Eldridge 6-0, 6-0 at the number six spot.
Karatosic put the Eagles one match away as he knocked off Lincoln Shine 6-0, 6-1 at the number five spot. Emory got the clinch from Kartik as he beat Hayes 6-2, 6-3 at number three. Shortly after, Johnstone put another point on the board as he defeated Boehling 6-2, 6-2 at number four.
The top two singles lines lasted a good while after the back four finished. At the number two spot, Kim was able to outlast Domkowski in a tight 6-3, 7-5 match.
At the number one spot, however, Onufrock picked up an impressive win over Kamenev. The senior battled to a 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 10-8 win over the nation's twelfth ranked player to give the Scots their lone point of the match.
MATCH TWO: Berry 4, Covenant 3
Covenant took on Berry in the second match of their doubleheader. The match was tightly contested throughout but eventually the Vikings were able to get the best of the Scots as they finished with a 4-3 win.
Berry threw the first punch in doubles as Anderson Lambert and Leo Nedkov beat Jacob Eldridge and Cameron Erb 6-0. The Vikings clinched the doubles point at the one spot as Aiden Benoualid and Jake Chapman knocked off Ben Onufrock and Caleb Domkowski 6-3.
The number two doubles match between Berry's Jace Goode and Xavier Deckard and Covenant's Graham Hayes and Brock Boehling was abandoned with the score tied at 4-4 due to Berry having already clinched the point.
The Scots bounced back in singles as Domkowski made quick work of Benoualid at the number two spot by a score of 6-3, 6-0. Onufrock briefly gave the Scots a 2-1 lead as he took down Chapman 6-2, 6-3 at the number one spot. Berry evened the match at the number four spot as Lambert defeated Boehling 6-4, 6-4.
The last three courts all found their way into third set tiebreaks with both teams needing two out of three to clinch the match. Berry grabbed the first one as Nedkov squeaked by Hayes at the three spot by a score of 6-4, 0-6, 10-5.
The Vikings were able to clinch the match at number five as Deckard beat Lincoln Shine 6-3, 3-6, 10-4. Covenant was able to win the last match as Eldridge turned in a gritty win over Lucas Duckstein 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 in the six spot.
