Baseball Drops Opening CCS Series With Asbury

WILMORE, Ky. -- Covenant baseball lost both games of their Saturday doubleheader with Asbury, dropping their opening CCS series with 6-2 and 13-9 losses in Wilmore.

GAME ONE: Asbury 6, Covenant 2

The Eagles' pitching staff held Covenant to three hits in game one as the Scots fell, 6-2.

Daniel Counts had a good day at the plate to head up the offense, going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer. Nate Jones also recorded a hit for the Scots.

Counts was dialed in at the plate in the beginning stages, as he punished a baseball over the fence in the top of the first inning to put Covenant up 2-0.

Zach Barrett (1-3) was able to hold Asbury at bay in the first two innings, but the Eagles answered back with a three-run third to take a lead they would not give up.

Cayden Devine (1-3) got the win for Asbury, throwing five innings of two-run ball, while Barrett got the loss after 3.2 innings, giving up five runs and striking out three.

Josh McNulty went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a homer, to lead the Eagles offense.

GAME TWO: Asbury 13, Covenant 9

The Scots got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but could not score any more runs as Asbury held on for the 13-9 win.

Ezra Finton went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs, while Elliott Eastin added a pair of RBIs on a pair of hits. Brady Daniell added 3.2 innings of scoreless relief as well, racking up five strikeouts.

The Eagles' bats were on fire at the outset, as they scored six runs, putting the Scots in an early hole.

Finton and Daniel Counts tried to dig out of it with a two-run homer and an RBI single, making it 6-3, but Asbury added seven more runs between the third and fifth innings to make it 13-3.

Covenant scored two more in the seventh to try and close the gap, and then Nate Jones' two-run shot in the eighth put it at 13-7.

In the ninth, Eastin drove home a pair of runs with one out to make it 13-9, and then Matthew Ianniello's walk loaded the bases. However, Asbury was able to record the final two outs to hold on.

Aaron Beaman and CJ Hussey had three-hit games to help out the offense, and Devin Walker (2-3) got the win with six solid innings. Ethan Goebert (0-3) got the loss for the Scots.
