LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant softball's offense heated up in game two to earn a split with visiting Brevard, falling in game one, 2-0, but winning game two, 7-4, at the Covenant Softball Field.Â
GAME TWO: Covenant 7, Brevard 4
The Scots overcame a 3-0 deficit with seven unanswered runs, holding on to take a 7-4 win in game two.
Madison Taylor (3-for-4, two RBIs),
Cassidi Phillips (3-for-4, RBI), and
Elizabeth Yother (2-for-3, RBI) led the way offensively, while Yother (2-4) navigated all seven innings in the circle, striking out four and only allowing one run in her final six innings of work.
After the Tornados (3-1) scored three in the first inning, it was up to the offense to step up.
They did.
Phillips got Covenant (4-8) on the board in the third with her RBI double, and then Taylor tied it up in the fourth with a two-RBI single.
The Scots added four more in the fifth, beginning with Yother's RBI single, and then
Lily Campbell followed with a single up the middle to bring Yother home. Campbell would then score the fourth run of the inning on a Brevard error to make it 7-3.
Yother did the rest, striking out three over her final two innings to close the door.
Regan Winkler paced the Tornado offense, going 3-for-4. Megan Bint (0-1) was handed the loss.
GAME ONE: Brevard 2, Covenant 0
The Scots (3-8) mustered seven hits, but could not put together a run-scoring rally, falling 2-0 in game one.
All seven hits came from seven different players, with
Lily Campbell's double the lone extra-base hit.
Charley Clark (2-4) was brilliant in the circle, allowing just two earned runs over seven innings, picking up four strikeouts.
The first four innings went by quickly, as both pitchers held their opponents scoreless.
Brevard changed that tone in the fifth inning, however, as a walk and a triple brought home the ultimate winning run.
The Tornados (3-0) added a second run in the sixth on an RBI single, but Clark dug in, navigating the rest of the sixth and seventh innings without allowing a run.
Elizabeth Auciello (2-0) countered in the circle for Brevard, though, retiring her final eight batters in a row to end the game.
Emily Hill and Andrea Furr collected two hits apiece to lead the Tornado offense.
