LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant softball engineered 20 runs between their two games to sweep the doubleheader over Berea, 10-2, and 10-3, on Friday afternoon at the Covenant softball field.
GAME ONE: Covenant 10, Berea 2 (5 innings)
The Scots scored in every inning on their way to walking off game one in the bottom of the fifth to win via mercy rule, 10-2.
All but two in the starting lineup recorded a hit in the game in a balanced and consistent scoring attack, led by
Cassidi Phillips' and
Julie Mavity's two knocks apiece.
Charley Clark dealt from the circle, picking up the win behind five two-run innings, racking up eight strikeouts.
The scoring began in the first inning, as an error by the Mountaineers (0-3) and a
Haley Russell RBI walk put the Scots (2-7) up 2-0. However, Berea answered in the second with a two-run double from Maya Meads to knot things at two apiece.
Covenant dominated from there.
Another defensive miscue by the Mountaineers gave the Scots the lead in the third, and then
Kallie Branum's RBI single and
Megan Porras' RBI groundout extended the lead to 7-2 in a blink.
Covenant would add the finishing touches in the fifth, getting a run via a wild pitch and then a RBI base knock from Phillips, allowing
Lily Campbell and
Madison Taylor to score the final runs.
Meads, Jessyca Searcy, and Candice Williams recorded the lone hits for Berea, with Williams (0-2) being handed the loss in the circle.
GAME TWO: Covenant 10, Berea 3 (5.5 innings, shortened due to darkness)
The Covenant offense was at it again in game two, coming back from a 3-1 deficit with nine unanswered runs to sweep the doubleheader, 10-3.
Haley Russell and
Cailey Barnett picked up a pair of hits apiece to lead the offense, while
Elizabeth Yother (1-4) earned the win in the circle with six three-run innings, striking out seven.
Russell got the game going in the first with her RBI single to give the Scots the early 1-0 lead. However, the Mountaineers notched three runs in the third inning to go ahead 3-1.
The offense went back to work.
In the bottom of the third, Russell started matters again with an RBI walk, and then Barnett followed with an RBI single. A wild pitch brought in a third Covenant run to make it 4-3 in favor of the Scots.
Russell was back at it in the fourth, doubling in a pair of runs before Barnett added a two-RBI single of her own to make it 8-3. Another wild pitch and a
Lexi Tincknell RBI double would complete the scoring.
Yother dialed in outside of her tumultuous third frame, allowing just one hit and allowing two baserunners overall the rest of the game.
Emily Searcy (2-for-3, RBI) and Josie Hollingsworth (2-for-3, two RBIs) led the Mountaineer offense.
