LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Covenant took on MUW in their first match played at the Covenant Tennis Complex of the season on Saturday. After a slow start in doubles, the Scots were able to bounce back and sweep all six singles courts to claim a 6-1 victory.
MUW took control of the doubles as Josh Cooper and Alvaro Bardales beat Gavin Patton and Cameron Erb 6-3 to put the pressure on the top two courts. Both one and two doubles were tightly contested, but the Owls were able to grab a 6-4 victory at number one, as Jorge Ortiz and Sandro Giangregorio knocked off Ben Onufrock and Caleb Domkowski.
Despite having already lost the doubles point, the Scots were able to win at number two doubles, as Graham Hayes and Brock Boehling won 6-4 over Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez.
The match took a turn as singles play started, as Covenant took control at the number one, two, and three lines.
Onufrock dominated in the one slot as he quickly defeated Ortiz 6-1, 6-1. The Scots got a similar result from Caleb Domkowski at line two, as he beat Cooper 6-0, 6-2. Hayes was tested but was able to beat Garcia 6-3, 7-6(5), putting the Scots one match from the win.
The clinch came from Boehling as he was able to fend off Giangregorio 6-2, 6-3 to put the Scots up 4-1 with two matches left. Patton came through in the five slot as he picked up a gritty win over Bardales 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. Freshman Lincoln Shine completed the singles sweep for the Scots as he knocked off Fernandez 6-2, 6-3.
