LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant men's basketball fell in a heartbreaker on senior day, 91-88, at Barnes PE Center on Saturday evening.
Seniors
Logan Patterson,
Fisher Mitchell, and
Gus Hood, along with student manager
Parker Pruitt were honored pregame, and the Scots (8-16, 3-8 CCS) put together an inspiring performance out of the gate in their honor.
Patterson started his night with a pair of triples, and then the team rattled off a 10-4 stretch later in the half, with
Derrius Teagle dropping five.
The Panthers (12-11, 4-6 CCS) answered back with a 13-0 run of their own, putting Covenant down 10 with 7:35 to play in the half.Â
Pierce Smith, Patterson, and
Bolton Born had other ideas.
An 11-0 run by those three got them right back in it, and the two teams traded buckets until the end of the half, where the score was 47-46 Scots.
Covenant again came out firing at the outset of the half, as
Luuk Dusek hit a jumper and added a steal and assist on
Korbin Long's fastbreak layup to help engineer a 13-5 run, capped off by another Patterson triple.
The Scots would add an 8-2 run just a couple of minutes later, and then another little 6-0 stretch put Covenant up 10 with 9:04 to play.
The Panthers woke up from that point, scoring 11 unanswered and forcing another do or die situation.
Trailing by as many as five with 5:06 to play, the Scots chipped away, finally tying things up with Smith's hook shot.
However, the Panthers would have the final word, as they outscored the Scots 4-1 the rest of the way to close it out.
Patterson led all scorers with 22 points, while Smith added 20 and three blocks. Micah McAllister and Catfish Battle scored 15 each to lead LaGrange.
