WILMORE, Ky. -- Covenant men's basketball had their best field goal percentage in the NCAA-era on Tuesday evening, helping them defeat Asbury, 94-83, at the Luce Center in Wilmore.
The Scots hit a blistering 63.2 percent of their shots (36-of-57) during the course of the game, the best mark since 2003, including 11-of-19 from downtown (57.9 percent), which was the best percentage since February 2022, a truly astounding display of efficiency.
Pierce Smith (19 points, 8-of-13 field goals) and
Logan Patterson (17 points, 6-of-9 field goals) led the way for Covenant, with
Jake Stephens adding 12 and
Ethan Parker contributing 10.
The Scots never trailed in the game, beginning things with a dominant first half in which they led by as many as 25. A 22-3 run was the main culprit, during which everyone was involved in the fun.
Derrius Teagle dropped in the first four points of that key run, but he was not alone, as
Noah Pence,
Cole Carroll, Stephens, Smith, Parker, and
Korbin Long all scored during that stretch.
After Covenant (3-10, 1-2 CCS) held off Asbury's comeback attempt late in the first half, they continued pouring it on in the second half, going on a 9-2 run to go up by 28. The Eagles (3-11, 1-1 CCS) would not go away, though, as they cut it down to 11 with 10:03 to play.
However, the Scots responded again, rattling off 11 unanswered points to put the game in cruise control. This time, it was
Fisher Mitchell's time to shine, as he scored five of those 11 points.
Aaron Thompson and Indred Whitaker scored 15 each off the bench to pace Asbury in scoring, while Konlin Brown scored 13 and had six steals.
