LAGRANGE, Ga. - Covenant opened conference play against LaGrange on Saturday, competing throughout the contest, but was unable to match the Panthers' efficient shooting, falling by a score of 128-93.
The game opened in a back-and-forth fashion, with neither team leading by more than four points through the first seven minutes as LaGrange held a narrow 17-15 advantage.
The Panthers (8-4, 1-0 CCS) then put together the first significant run of the game, scoring seven consecutive points to extend their lead to nine. LaGrange later built its largest lead of the half at 41-26, but Covenant responded by trimming the deficit to eight before heading into halftime trailing 59-47.
LaGrange took control early in the second half, opening the period on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 20. Covenant made multiple attempts to cut into the deficit, but the Panthers maintained their momentum and pulled away to secure a 128-93 victory.
Covenant (2-9, 0-1 CCS) showcased a balanced scoring effort, with six players finishing with at least eight points. Noah Pence led the Scots with 10 points, while Jake Stephens and Korbin Long each added nine.
Pierce Smith, Logan Patterson, Ethan Parker, and Fisher Mitchell all contributed eight points apiece. Smith also made an impact defensively, recording six rebounds and three blocks.
LaGrange turned in an efficient shooting performance, finishing 61 percent from the field and 57 percent from three-point range. Covenant shot 35 percent overall and 21 percent from beyond the arc. The Panthers also held a 52-42 advantage on the glass, while the Scots won the turnover battle, committing 18 turnovers and forcing LaGrange into 23.
