LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant women's basketball could not overcome a slow start, falling to Huntingdon, 82-70, at Barnes PE Center on Saturday afternoon.
Chloe Bertrand had another good afternoon scoring-wise for the Scots (5-15, 4-7 CCS), scoring 21, while adding seven boards, eight assists and four steals.
Amanda Neff (12 points, three steals) and
Violet Wright (10 points, eight boards, two steals) added some solid games as well.
Covenant got off to a slow start offensively, as the visiting Hawks (9-9, 6-3 CCS) went up 25-12 at the end of one.
The Scots were able to manufacture a 6-1 stretch early in the second period, capped by an
Ora Hall bucket, to close it to 10. Following a Huntingdon response, Covenant closed out the half on a 7-2 run, five of which came from
Emma Kaye Fuller.
After falling behind by as many as 18 in the third, the Scots again put together another positive stretch, scoring seven straight.
Cair Canady was key in that run, drawing a pair of fouls and hitting three free throws.
Covenant would close the gap further in the early stages of the fourth, going on an 8-0 run, finalized by back-to-back threes from Bertrand, to make it an eight-point game with 8:07 to go.
Another five unanswered later in the fourth made it a six-point game with 3:53 to go, but that would be as close as it would get, with the Hawks extending their lead as high as 13 in the final stretch.
Huntingdon was led by Makayla Ford (24) and Deshauna Foote (20), while Ashanti Thomas added eight points and 14 boards.
