LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant men's basketball could not hold off a strong Maryville offense on Tuesday evening, falling 96-84 in Barnes PE Center.
Covenant (5-12. 2-4 CCS) got a stellar performance from
Korbin Long, who dropped 17 points on 6-of-10 field goals, but Maryville (15-4, 6-0 CCS) countered with a near 53 percent team field goal percentage, enabling them to get the win.
The game was tight early on, but with 15:42 to go in the first half, Covenant ran off their first run of the game, scoring nine unanswered to take a seven-point lead.
Thomas Malcolm and
Fisher Mitchell got in the action in this stretch, with each scoring a basket.
Maryville answered the bell, however, coming back to take a three-point lead with 7:15 to go in the half. Covenant then rose to that challenge, scoring four straight.Â
Both teams remained deadlocked the remainder of the half, but
Jake Stephens had the last word, dropping in a last-second layup to put Covenant up by one at the break.
As the second half opened, though, Maryville began to take control, going on a 13-2 run to put themselves up 10.
Covenant found little bits of momentum throughout the second half, but struggled to put together a consistent run to get back in the game, as Maryville's Chase Morgan scored 18 of his 28 points in the second half to quell any swings Covenant's way.
Pierce Smith contributed 16 points to Covenant's effort, and
Logan Patterson (11) and
Isaac Rorey (10) also added fouble figures.
