GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Covenant men's basketball overcame a nine-point second half deficit to defeat the Bob Jones Bruins, 96-90, in Greenville on Wednesday evening.
Logan Patterson scored a season-high 29 points in the win, 16 of which came in the second half.
Jake Stephens added 14, while
Pierce Smith had 10 and 10 boards for the Scots.
Covenant (6-12) started out hot, outscoring the Bruins (4-5) 14-4 in the first 4:47 of the half.
James White,
Thomas Malcolm, and
Lucas Bryant all aided in this stretch with a bucket apiece.
Bob Jones countered with a 12-2 run in the next 3:22 to tie things up, however, and the two teams traded small runs for the next portion of the half. It would be the Bruins that pulled ahead with their final stretch run at the break, though, as they led 46-42.
Bob Jones extended their lead at the outset of the second half, pushing it out to nine with 15:46 to go.Â
Then the Scots came alive again.
A trio of threes, two from
Jake Stephens and one from
Isaac Rorey, tied things up at 61, and then
Noah Pence gave the Scots a 66-64 lead with another one from downtown with 12:40 to go.Â
The Bruins were not done, as they came back to lead by four with 5:20 to go. This time,
Fisher Mitchell and
Derrius Teagle had the answers, scoring five straight to put Covenant back up one.
Shad Vander Hart retorted for Bob Jones, throwing down a dunk plus a foul to put the Bruins back ahead. Then Patterson entered the fray, dropping five in a row, including a go-ahead three.
Finally, with 54 seconds to go, the Scots delivered the knockout punch, as Patterson drained another 3-pointer from the left wing to give Covenant a two-possession lead they would not relinquish.
Vander Hart led Bob Jones with 29 points and 15 rebounds, while Trevor Pittman added 22.
