LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Scots forced a late turnover and hit three big free throws to earn a hard-fought win over Piedmont, 72-70, at Barnes PE Center on Saturday afternoon.
Four Covenant players reached double figures, led by
Chloe Bertrand's 20.
Jada Sanders added 14, while
Amanda Neff had 14, six boards, three blocks and two steals and
Violet Wright collected 14 points, seven rebounds, and five steals.
After trailing by as many as seven in the first quarter, the Scots (4-12, 3-4 CCS) rallied, going on a 15-2 run.
Cair Canady scored the last five points of the stretch to put Covenant up six.
The Scots put together another run late in the second after Piedmont (6-10, 3-4 CCS) closed the gap to two, outscoring the Lions 13-2 in the final three minutes to go up 13 at the break.
Piedmont was not done fighting, however, going on a 23-7 run in the span of 7:04 to take the lead. Once again, Covenant rose to the challenge, going on a 6-2 run to close out the quarter. Sanders had four of those six, helping the Scots go ahead by one.
The fourth quarter was tight throughout, but with 4:48 to go, the Scots found themselves down by seven and needing to dig deep to grit their way to a win.Â
They got it done.
After seven quick unanswered Covenant points, the game came down to who would blink first.Â
The Scots didn't blink.
After Wright knocked down two clutch free throws to put Covenant up one with 16 seconds to go, the Lions got the ball with the shot clock off and in need of one basket.Â
The Scot defense was prepared, as they trapped and forced a travel, leading to Bertrand's free throw to make it two. With seven seconds to go, Hayley Borino's three came up short, and Covenant had done it.
Riley Bryan led Piedmont with 12 points, and Kylie Watkins added nine and five steals.
