LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant women's basketball stayed with the top team in the CCS for three quarters, but a tough fourth quarter felled the Scots, as Belhaven emerged victorious, 72-60.
Chloe Bertrand had another nice game for Covenant (2-12, 2-4 CCS), recording a team-high 14 points, seven boards, and a pair of steals.
Hannah Eidson led the way defensively with four steals.
At the outset, it looked like the Blazers (12-1, 5-0 CCS) were going to run away with the game, but the Scots fought, using a steady comeback to pull to within one late in the first.
In the second, Belhaven kept a small lead for the entirety of the period, but an and-1 by Eidson with seven seconds remaining trimmed it down to four at halftime.
Covenant used that momentum going into the third quarter, as separate buckets by
Emma Kaye Fuller, Eidson, and
Cair Canady made it a one-possession game.Â
Bertrand would finally tie things up with 6:14 to go in the period, and then a quartet of free throws by
Amanda Neff gave the Scots their first lead.
The Blazers overcame the small disadvantage, however, but Neff would add one final layup with 19 seconds in the quarter to make it 50-49 in favor of Belhaven at the end of the third.
That would be as close as Covenant would get the rest of the way, as the Blazers outscored the Scots 22-11 in the fourth to pull away.
Katelyn Coleman and Savannah Hailey had 22 points apiece for Belhaven, while Veronica Williams added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
