WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - Covenant was right back in action at Salem after sweeping Brevard the day before. After struggling to score runs in the first inning, the Scots exploded for 18 runs in game two, earning a doubleheader split against the Spirits.Â
Game 1 Final: Covenant 3, Salem 4
Records: Covenant (7-10), Salem (3-10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Salem took the lead in the second inning with a two-out RBI single to right field.Â
- The Spirits doubled their lead in the third inning with an RBI single through the right side.Â
- Once again Salem converted with two outs as an RBI single with two outs in the fifth inning made it 3-0.Â
- In the sixth inning, the Spirits scored what turned out to be an important insurance run with an RBI single to center field.Â
- Back-to-back RBI singles by Olivia Stefl and Kathleen Carpenter made it 4-2 in the seventh inning with no outs.Â
- Later in the frame, Cassidi Phillips drove in Stefl with an RBI single to right field to put Covenant within one run.Â
- The Scots had the bases loaded with one out, however a lineout and a popout saw them fall just short in their late rally.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Lauren Edgar (4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 K) and Madison Bowden (2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K) were the two pitchers Covenant used in game one.Â
- Gaines (2-for-3, 1 R) and Carpenter (2-for-3, 1 RBI) each posted two hits to lead the Covenant offense.Â
- Covenant outhit Salem 8-7 and had one more error then the home team at 3-2.
Game 2 Final: Covenant 18, Salem 6

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Covenant took its first lead of the day with an RBI single from Ashlyn Gaines that scored Isabella Duran in the first inning.Â
- The Scots blew the game open with six runs in the second inning with the help of four hits, three walks, and one hit batter.Â
- Covenant kept piling it on in the third inning with eight runs to make it 15-0 highlighted by a 2-RBI double by Gaines and a 2-RBI single from Tisha Holland.Â
- The Spirits got on the board in the third inning with two runs on a passed ball and an infield error.Â
- Stefl made it 16-2 in the fourth inning with an RBI single up the middle that scored Gaines.
- Gaines drove in another run in the fifth inning with an RBI double before Covenant added another on an infield error.
- The Spirits scored one run in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to avoid the run-rule.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 5-7 all-time against Salem.Â
- Charley Clark (5 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K) picked up her third win of the season in the circle.
- Gaines (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 3 R) and Duran (3-for-5, 4 R, 1 RBI) each delivered three hits to lead the Covenant offense.Â
- Madison Taylor (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI), Haley Russell (2-for-2, 1 R, 1 RBI), Carpenter (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Cailey Barnett (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI) had strong days at the plate too.Â
- Covenant outhit Salem 18-8.
- 18 runs is a season-high for the Scots.Â
