BREVARD, N.C. - Covenant took on Brevard on Friday in a doubleheader for the first of four games across the "Old North State". Behind impressive pitching, the Scots clinched a sweep of the Tornados.Â
Game 1 Final: Covenant 4, Brevard 2
Records: Covenant (6-9), Brevard (2-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Scots began their strong first inning with Gracie Lacle scoring from third base on a wild pitch.Â
- Later in the frame, Isabella Duran brought home Haley Russell with an RBI double to center field.Â
- The next batter was Kathleen Carpenter, who smashed a two-run home run to put Covenant ahead 4-0.
- Charley Clark retired the first 15 batters she faced in the circle.Â
- A couple of errors by the Scots allowed the Tornados to score two runs in the sixth inning.Â
- Brevard had runners at the corners with one out in the seventh inning, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the game.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Clark (7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 9 K picked up her third win of the year and struck out a career-high nine batters.Â
- Lacle (2-for-3, 1 R) and Cailey Barnett (2-for-3) led the Covenant offense with two hits each.Â
- Carpenter's homer was her first of the season.
- Covenant outhit Brevard 7-4.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Scots had a chance to score in the first inning, but had a runner thrown out at the plate from center field to end the threat.
- Once again, Covenant opened the scoring via a wild pitch as Barnett scored in the third inning.Â
- Later in the frame, an RBI groundout by Ashlyn Gaines immediately followed by an RBI single by Haley Russell put the Scots ahead 3-0.Â
- Madison Bowden allowed just one Brevard base runner in the first three innings in the circle.Â
- The Tornados put a runner on second base in the fourth and fifth innings, but that was as close as they would get to scoring.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 8-2 all-time against Brevard.
- Bowden (4 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) picked up the win for the Scots in the circle.
- Lauren Edgar (3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 K) pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Bowden to close the game.Â
- Russell (3-for-3, 1 RBI) had a career-high three hits to lead the Covenant offense.
- The Scots outhit the Tornados 7-5. Â
