Covenant Loses Back-And-Forth Game at Emory

ATLANTA, Ga. - After playing its first 10 games of the season on its home field, Covenant hit the road for the first time to take on Emory. In a back-and-forth game, the Eagles did enough late in the game to earn the win.Ā 

Final: Covenant 7, Emory 9
Records: Covenant (9-2), Emory (10-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Ben Johnson scored Roby McClarnon with an RBI single in the first inning to give Covenant a 1-0 lead.Ā 
  • Later in the frame, a bases-loaded balk brought home Sam Cecil to make it 2-0.Ā 
  • It didn't take long for Emory to tie the game as in the first inning it delivered an RBI single and an RBI fielder's choice.Ā 
  • Later in the frame, a throwing error made it 3-2, Eagles.Ā 
  • The Scots tied the game at three in the third inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk drawn by Elliott Eastin.Ā 
  • With an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, Emory took back the lead at 4-3.Ā 
  • Covenant responded in the fifth inning as RBI doubles from Josh McCaskill and Nate Jones moved it ahead 5-4.Ā 
  • Once again Emory answered back with three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run.Ā 
  • The Eagles hit another home run in the sixth inning, this one a solo shot to lead off the inning.Ā 
  • In the seventh inning, Nate Jones put the Scots back within one run with a 2-RBI double down the left-field line.Ā 
  • Emory added an insurance run in the seventh inning with a two-out RBI single.
  • McCaskill led off the ninth inning with a single, but any hope of a late rally ended on a 5-4-3 double play by the Emory infield.Ā 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 11-20 all-time against Emory.
  • RHP Bryce Bollinger (5 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) suffered his first loss of the season.Ā 
  • RHP Ethan Goebert (3 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 K) kept the Scots in the game in relief of Bollinger.Ā 
  • McClarnon (2-for-5, 1 R), McCaskill (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI), and Jones (2-for-4, 3 RBI) each had two hits to lead the Covenant offense.Ā 
  • Emory outhit Covenant 13-9.
  • The Scots committed three errors while the Eagles had two.Ā 

UP NEXT: Covenant hosts Emory tomorrow at home for a doubleheader beginning at noon.Ā Ā
