Explosive Offense Late Pushes Scots Over Bruins

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Covenant started its three-game set with Bob Jones in what looked like a pitcher's duel for much of the day. Covenant changed the narrative, scoring five runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to earn a 13-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Scots went ahead in the second inning as Josh McCaskill brought home Roby McClarnon from first base on an RBI double down the left field line. 
  • Nate Jones made it 2-0 in the second inning, as he led off with a solo home run to left field for the first homer of his career. 
  • RHP Bryce Bollinger retired the Bruins in order in the fourth and fifth innings. 
  • In the sixth inning, Roby McClarnon used his speed to score from second base on a wild pitch the catcher struggled to locate. 
  • The Bruins scored their first run in the seventh inning with an RBI single to center field.
  • Bob Jones had the bases loaded and one out with a chance to tie the game, but a strikeout and a groundout to third base recorded by Bollinger kept Covenant in front. 
  • The Scots used four hits in the seventh base to score five runs which included a 2-RBI double from Ben Johnson and an RBI double by Elliott Eastin. 
  • The Bruins launched a solo home run with two outs in the eighth inning. 
  • Ben Johnson hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the frame, a three-run shot to left field. 
  • McCaskill delivered a 2-RBI double down the left field line to put the mercy rule in effect at 13-2. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 7-2 all-time against Bob Jones. 
  • Bollinger (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) picked up his third win of the year after going a season-high seven innings on the bump.
  • Johnson (3-for-5, 2 R, 5 RBI, 1 HR) and McCaskill (3-for-4, 3 RBI) led the Covenant offense. 
  • RHP Christian Vander Veen (1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 K) pitched an inning in relief for the Scots. \
  • Covenant scored 10 of its 13 runs in the final two innings. 
  • The Scots outhit the Bruins 13-7.

UP NEXT: Covenant plays a doubleheader with Bob Jones tomorrow afternoon beginning at 12 p.m.
