Covenant Shows Toughness in Road Win at LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. - With its ranking for the CCS Tournament set at No. 5 no matter the result, Covenant didn't have much to play for in its final regular season game of the year at LaGrange. That didn't matter for the Scots though as they went on the road at a tough place to play and ended the regular season on a winning note.

FIRST HALF:

  • Covenant scored the first eight points of the game behind 3-pointers from Jake Stephens and Logan Patterson.
  • The Scots kept utilizing the 3-pointer as Colt Donley, Luuk Dusek, and Fisher Mitchell each delivered one to put them ahead 20-9. 
  • A pair of baskets by LaGrange cut into the Covenant lead 21-15. 
  • By the 11:25 marker, the Panthers were within two points after a made triple. 
  • A Pierce Smith tip in later followed by a triples from Patterson and Adam Deininger stretched Covenant's lead back to six points at 31-25. 
  • After the two teams traded baskets for a few possessions, a triple from Russell Hunter put Covenant ahead 10 points with 7:48 remaining. 
  • LaGrange battled back to within five points before Adam Deininger buried a 3-pointer with 3:35 left in the half. 
  • Five made free throws by the Panthers cut the lead to two points, but Mitchell had the final basket of the half to put Covenant up 58-54 at the break. 

SECOND HALF:

  • The Panthers started off the half strong with a 14-3 run in less than four minutes to take the lead for the first time. 
  • Covenant crawled its way back using a 5-0 run to get within two points before taking back the lead at the 11:38 marker on an inside basket from Patterson. 
  • That basket was part of an 8-0 Covenant run capped off by a transition basket from Luuk Dusek to put the score at 86-78. 
  • Donley scored four points after making a triple while getting fouled to put the Scots up 90-81. 
  • With 5:20 remaining, the game was within one possession at 94-91 after LaGrange started to get some defensive stops. 
  • Both teams suddenly went cold from the field as the time ticked down to 1:18 left in the game before the next made basket came as LaGrange trailed by two points at 95-93. 
  • Four made free throws and key defensive holds clinched the win for the Scots. 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant moves to 21-18 all-time against LaGrange.
  • Patterson scored 17 points with five made triples to lead Covenant in scoring. 
  • Deininger made four 3-pointers as he posted 14 points. 
  • Donley with 12 points and Mitchell with 11 points were also in double-figures scoring. 
  • Smith led the Scots in rebounds with 11 while also having seven rebounds and three blocks. 
  • Covenant was 38.7% (29-75) from the field and 39.5% (17-43) shooting 3-pointers while LaGrange was 40% (34-85) and 29.6% (8-27) in the same categories. 
  • Both teams had 57 rebounds.
  • With the win, Covenant completed the season sweep over LaGrange. 

UP NEXT: Covenant begins postseason play on Tuesday with the Quarterfinals of the CCS Tournament at Asbury.
