Second Half Run Comes Up Short for Scots in CCS Quarterfinals

WILMORE, Ky. - Covenant's CCS Quarterfinals matchup at Asbury didn't go how anybody could have imagined it would. The Scots trailed by 23 points before the lights went out in the gym with 7:31 remaining in the first half, forcing the two teams to finish the game the next day. Covenant came back out of the delay with new energy, but ultimately didn't get enough stops late to continue its postseason run.

FIRST HALF:

  • The Eagles buried three triples in the first four minutes to open up a 13-4 lead. 
  • Covenant brought it back to within three points as Luuk Dusek knocked down a pair of triples within 16 seconds of each other. 
  • A 6-0 run by Asbury pushed its lead back to nine points at 21-12. 
  • After the Scots had gotten back with seven points, the Eagles went on a 16-0 run over four minutes to go up 40-17 right before the lights went out for the night.
  • The next day, Covenant scored six of the first eight points with two baskets coming by Pierce Smith. 
  • Before halftime, Covenant got to within 17 points, but Asbury finished the last 90 seconds strong to be up 50-30.  

SECOND HALF:

  • Asbury scored the first two points out of halftime, before Adam Deininger scored seven points himself, including a 3-pointer while getting fouled to make it 52-37. 
  • Deininger kept rolling with five more points to cut the lead to 12 points with 17:59 remaining.  
  • After the two teams traded baskets for a few minutes, Zach Wescher buried a triple to get Covenant within eight points at 65-57, which was as close as it would get to Asbury during the second half. 
  • The Eagles immediately answered with a made jumper and 3-pointer to push the lead back to 13 points. 
  • At the 9:01 and 6:43 markers, Covenant was within nine points after a layup by Dusek and a triple by Jake Stephens. 
  • After the 3-pointer for the Scots, Asbury scored on consecutive possessions to move up 83-70. 
  • Covenant cut the lead to 10 points on a basket by Logan Patterson with 2:23 remaining, but it didn't get the stops it needed late to keep its season alive.

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant moves to 2-7 all-time against Asbury. 
  • Patterson with 17 points and Deininger with 14 points led the offensive attack for Covenant. 
  • Smith recorded a double-double with a 12 points and 12 rebounds performance. 
  • Kaleb Lofton and Dusek each had 11 points. 
  • Luke Imfeld, Clayton Winter, and Tyler Hall each had 19 points for Asbury. Winter also had 12 rebounds for the double-double. 
  • Covenant shot 35.4% (10-42) from the field and was 29.3% (12-41) shooting 3-pointers while Asbury was 47.1% (32-68) and 40.9% (9-22) in the same categories. 
  • Covenant outscored Asbury 66-57 after the game was restarted post power-outage delay.
