JACKSON, Miss. - Covenant had a great opportunity to extend its lead atop the CCS standings on Saturday as it played at second-place Belhaven. As it has proven to be over the years, the match was closely contested, but an early Whitt Tisdale goal was the decider as Covenant left town with a win. Â
Final: Covenant 1, Belhaven 0
Records: Covenant (7-4-3, 4-0 CCS), Belhaven (9-4-4, 2-1-2 CCS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- In the 10th minute, Covenant goalie Eli Honeycutt punted the ball across the field as a Belhaven defender misplayed it off the turf, leading Tisdale in on goal, where he made no mistake with his shot.Â
- Belhaven responded as it recorded the next four shots across 20 minutes of play, as two were off target while the other two were saved by Honeycutt.Â
- Isaiah Harper had Covenant's final attempt on goal of the half in the 43rd minute as the Scots went into the locker room up 1-0.Â
- At the break, Belhaven had outshot Covenant 6-4.
- Neither team recorded a shot for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Â
- Later in the half, Tisdale and Jonathan Welsh took shots for Covenant as it looked to build some cushion off its one-goal lead.Â
- The Blazers tried their hardest to find an equalizer in the closing minutes with four shots, including one that forced Honeycutt into a save, as well as two last-minute corner kicks, but the Scots held on to earn the win.Â
