Covenant Falls to Maryville in DH on Monday

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Covenant took on the Maryville Scots for a doubleheader on the road on Monday. Despite taking an early lead in game two, Covenant couldn't hang on to earn a split. 

Game 1 Final: Covenant 0, Maryville 8
Records: Covenant (3-22, 0-9 CCS), Maryville (26-9, 9-2 CCS) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Maryville did some damage with two outs in the first inning as four hits and one error later, it was ahead 5-0. 
  • An infield error and a RBI single through the right side made it 7-0 in the second inning. 
  • In the fourth inning, Maryville added its eighth and final run on a RBI sacrifice fly to right field. 
  • Covenant put runners on second and third in the fifth inning, but could not score them and avoid the run rule. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Maryville outhit Covenant 8-2.
  • Covenant committed three errors while Maryville had none. 
  • Olivia Stefl and Makenna Dance each had one of Covenant's two hits. 
  • Madison Bowden (1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 1 BB) took the loss for the Scots. 
  • Valery Baxter (3 IP, 1 H, 1 ER)  threw three innings in relief. 

Game 2 Final: Covenant 5, Maryville 8
Records: Covenant (3-23, 0-10 CCS), Maryville (27-9, 10-2 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Isabella Duran gave Covenant the lead in the first inning with a RBI single through the right side. 
  • Three batters later, Lakyn Hacker scored another run for the Scots with a RBI single to shortstop.
  • Later in the frame, Jenna Young made it 4-0 Covenant with a 2-RBI single through the left side. 
  • Back-to-back RBI singles in the third inning for Maryville made it 4-2. 
  • In the fourth inning, Maryville tied the game at four with a RBI double to left field and a RBI groundout. 
  • Maryville took the lead for good in the fifth inning, using a bases-loaded walk and a RBI single through the left side to make it 6-4. 
  • In Maryville's final at-bats, it went ahead 8-4 thanks to a couple of infield errors from Covenant. 
  • Covenant scored its fifth run in the seventh inning as Olivia Stefl scored Madison Taylor on an infield throwing error.

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 11-23 all-time against Maryville.
  • Maryville outhit Covenant 10-4. 
  • Covenant committed two errors while Maryville had one. 
  • Young, Hacker, Duran, and Helena Nagy each had a hit for the Scots. 
  • Baxter (2.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB), Mackenzie Kirby (1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K), Taylor Murdock (0.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K), and Madison Bowden (1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER) all pitched for Covenant. 

UP NEXT: Covenant travels to Wesleyan on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
