MACON, Ga. -Â Covenant visited Wesleyan looking for a pair of road conference wins. Thanks to clutch hitting in the seventh inning of both games, the Scots left town with two victories.Â
Game 1 Final:Â Covenant 5, Wesleyan 3
Records:Â Covenant (4-23, 1-10 CCS), Wesleyan (6-17, 2-9 CCS)Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI single to right field.Â
- The Scots went ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning as Mary Elaine Mitchell knocked a RBI double to center field before scoring on a RBI sacrifice fly from Isabella Duran.Â
- In the fifth inning, the Wolves went back in front with a pir of RBI singles.
- Duran delivered her second RBI sacrifice fly of the game in the sixth inning to tie the game at three.Â
- In the seventh inning, Ashlyn Gaines hit a RBI double to left field for what turned out to be the winning run.
- Covenant added another insurance run later in the frame as Bailey Johnson poked a RBI infield single.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant outhit Wesleyan 7-5.
- Wesleyan committed four errors while Covenant had one.Â
- Taylor Murdock led Covenant offensively as she went 2-for-4.
- LHP Madison Bowden (7 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) pitched her first career complete game to earn the win.Â
Game 2 Final:Â Covenant 10, Wesleyan 8
Records: Covenant (5-23, 2-10 CCS), Wesleyan (6-18, 2-10 CCS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- In back-to-back at-bats in the first inning, Gaines delivered a RBI double and Murdock hit a RBI single to put the Scots ahead 2-0.
- Covenant capitalized on three Wesleyan errors in the second inning and scored four runs to go up 6-0.
- Gaines did some more damage in the third inning with a 2-RBI single to center field to put the score at 8-0.
- In the bottom of the frame, Wesleyan responded with a grand slam to get back in the game at 8-4.
- The Wolves kept battling back as they scored four more runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at eight.Â
- Mitchell delivered a big RBI single to center field in the seventh inning and scored later in the frame as Gaines hit a RBI single to left field.Â
- Wesleyan put two runners on base in the seventh inning, but couldn't drive either runner home.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 33-5 all-time against Wesleyan.
- The Scots outhit the Wolves 11-10.
- Wesleyan committed five errors while Covenant had one.
- Mitchell led the offensive charge with a 4-for-5 day with 2 RBIs.
- Gaines also had a strong game with three hits and three RBIs.
- Mackenzie Kirby (2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB), Valery Baxter (2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER), and Murdock (2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) all pitched for Covenant.Â
