Scots Defeated By Panthers in CCS Opener

LAGRANGE, Ga. - Covenant dropped both games of the conference-opening doubleheader at LaGrange, but got some promising performances from some old and new faces.

Game 1 Final: LaGrange 10, Covenant 2
Records: Covenant (3-10, 0-1 CCS), LaGrange (6-15, 1-0 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Scots fell behind early after a 1-out triple by Alexa Gonzalez and a RBI single by Kelsea Moody put LaGrange up 1-0 at the end of the first inning.
  • The Panthers added another run in the second after a double steal of second and home with one out.
  • The Scots got on the board in the third inning thanks to a leadoff single from freshman Myla Still, who came around to score on a throwing error.
  • The two teams traded scoreless frames until the bottom of the fourth inning, when a RBI single from Kenzie Hornsby and a grand slam off of Gonzalez's bat put LaGrange up 7-1.
  • The Scots had a chance to respond in the top of the fifth inning with two outs, but left runners on the corners.
  • Covenant got a run back in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by senior Mary Elaine Mitchell, scoring fellow senior Taylor Murdock from second.
  • LaGrange responded in the bottom of the sixth with three runs of their own, thanks to a RBI groundout off the bat of Zoe Veres, an infield single by Abby Hefner, and a single to center by Jenna Yeary, which ended the game.

GAME NOTES:'

  • Mitchell went 1-3 with an RBI.
  • Murdock and Still each went 1-3 with a run scored.
  • Senior Jaycie Lyles went 1-1 with a walk.
  • Junior Helena Nagy also went 1-3.

Game 2 Final: LaGrange 6, Covenant 2
Records: Covenant (3-11, 0-2 CCS), LaGrange (7-15, 2-0 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  •  LaGrange went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first after Lindsey Swearngin scored on an E2 and Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Panthers extended their lead to 3-0 after a RBI single by Hannah Barnett.
  • Swearngin drove in another Panther in the bottom of the third to make it 4-0 and then Gonzalez doubled to make it 6-0, all with two outs in the inning.
  • The game stayed that way until the top of the 6th, when freshman Madison Bowden drove in the first Scots runs on a double to center field to make it 6-2.
  • The Scots could not keep that momentum going, however, as Mitchell was thrown out at the plate on Bowden's double and senior Makenna Dance flew out to right to end the inning.
  • Bowden held the Panthers scoreless in the sixth on the strength of two groundouts and a lineout, giving the Scots a chance in the top of the seventh.
  • The Scots, however, went down 1-2-3 in the 7th, finishing 0-2 in their doubleheader.

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 13-15 all-time against LaGrange.
  • Mitchell added three more hits in three plate appearances, putting her at a .667 season average.
  • Bowden's double was in her first and only plate appearance as a collegiate athlete. She also tossed 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out two and only allowing one hit without issuing a walk.
  • Murdock added another hit and run scored to her day's total.
  • Dance, Still, Nagy, and junior Olivia Stefl added one hit apiece.

UP NEXT: Covenant takes on Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at home.
