Scots Unable To Battle Back From Early Deficit

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - For the first time this season, Covenant took on Piedmont. Missing two key starters, the Scots were outmatched, falling 83-56. 

Final: Covenant 56, Piedmont 83 
Records: Covenant (4-17, 0-8 CCS), Piedmont (11-10, 2-6 CCS)

FIRST HALF:

  • Piedmont raced out to a 13-0 lead before a 3-pointer by Reece Pride right seconds prior to the first media timeout ended the run. 
  • The Lions extended their lead to 26-7 after an 8-0 scoring run. 
  • A triple from Luke Crowden followed by an old-fashioned 3-point play by David Compere put the score at 26-13 with 8:52 remaining. 
  • The Scots kept finding the open shooter outside as Logan Pearlman and Compere buried triples to cut the lead to 10 points. 
  • A Michael St. Germain 3-pointer made it a nine-point game before Piedmont responded with two 3-pointers of their own. 
  • Pierce Smith and Compere scored in the final minute, before a buzzer-beater layup from Piedmont put it up 44-31 at the intermission. 

SECOND HALF:

  • A pair of layups by Smith ended an almost six-minute scoring drought to begin the half for Covenant as it trailed 52-35.
  • An 11-0 run for the Lions put them up 63-35 and ended any comeback thoughts for the Scots. 
  • Piedmont continued to press on as a 3-pointer followed by five made free throws put it front 71-39. 
  • Compere and St. Germain each got another triple to go, but the Scots still trailed 77-45. 
  • Covenant ended the game on a 6-2 run to put the score at 83-56.  

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant moves to 17-18 all-time against Piedmont.
  • Compere was Covenant's leading scorer with 15 points. It's his third consecutive game with 15 points. 
  • Smith posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Both are new career-highs for the freshman. 
  • Covenant shot 30.9% (21-68) while Piedmont was 40.3% (31-77) from the field. 
  • The Scots committed 22 turnovers while the Lions had 14 turnovers. 

UP NEXT: Covenant hits the road for a game at LaGrange on Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
