Covenant Beaten On The Road at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. - The Scots fell to Belhaven for the second time this season, this time in Jackson. The loss keeps them winless in CCS play.

Final: Covenant 57, Belhaven 85 
Records: Covenant (4-16, 0-7 CCS), Belhaven (15-7, 7-3 CCS)

FIRST HALF:

  • Belhaven jumped out of the gate with a 12-0 run, getting two threes from Judah Jordan to spark it.
  • The Blazers had another successful 12-2 run from the 15:12 mark of the first half until the 9:56 mark, getting back to back baskets from Neal Terry to finish the run, giving the Blazers a 29-8 lead.
  • Scots freshman center Pierce Smith tried valiantly to get the Scots back in it, scoring back to back baskets, picking up three rebounds and blocking a couple of shots to pull the Scots a little closer.
  • The two teams traded baskets at the end of the half, with Belhaven taking a 48-30 lead into the half.

SECOND HALF:

  • The Scots had a quick 5-0 run to begin the half, getting a three from sophomore Gus Hood and a floater from fellow sophomore David Compere, cutting the deficit to 13.
  • Belhaven ran off a 12-5 run from that point on, reassuming a 20 point lead with just under 15 minutes remaining.
  • The Scots scored a few baskets over the next few minutes, trying to spark a run, but the Blazers had an answer for every one, gradually pulling further and further away from the Scots.
  • Belhaven put the nail in the coffin with a late run to pull to a 30 point lead, with a Michael St. Germain layup cutting it to the final score of 85-57 in the final seconds. 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant and Belhaven are now tied in their series at 4 games apiece.
  • Compere led Scots scoring with 15 points off the bench. Junior guard Luke Crowden contributed 11.
  • Senior forward Eli Witt and Pierce Smith tied for the rebounding lead with five boards each.
  • Gus Hood led with four assists for the Scots.
  • The Scots shot just 37% from the field, including 15% from three point land.

UP NEXT: Covenant is back on its home court on Tuesday, Feb. 6 against Piedmont. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
