WILMORE, K.Y. - Covenant had its eye set on a three-peat as Conference Champions with No. 5 seeded Huntingdon awaiting them in the Championship match after upsetting No. 1 seeded Asbury yesterday. The Scots didn't let the Cinderella story continue, as they dominated the Hawks in three sets to take home the trophy once again.
Final: Covenant 3, Huntingdon 0
Records: Covenant (22-12), Huntingdon (16-20)
FIRST SET:
- A 3-0 Covenant run with kills from Scarlett Martz and Kelsey Carman put Covenant ahead 9-4.
- The Scots scored five points in row which included two service aces by Cali Sandhoff as they led 17-8.
- Sandhoff delivered the set-winning kill as Covenant took the 25-13 win.
SECOND SET:
- A 6-0 run, including five kills from the Scots, put them ahead 8-4 early on.
- The lead extended to 18-10 after a 5-0 run for Covenant that included two kills by Sandhoff.
- The Scots kept the lead around eight points the remainder of the set as an attack error by the Hawks ended the set at 25-17.
THIRD SET:
- Covenant started to really put the hammer down with an 8-0 run led on by three consecutive kills from Carman to go up 13-5.
- On Carman's service rotation, Covenant scored six straight points to push the lead to 19-6.
- Sarah Jennings had the championship-clinching point at 25-12 with a service ace.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 26-9 all-time against Huntingdon.
- Sandhoff led the Scots with a double-double posting 16 assists and 10 kills. The sophomore also had six digs.
- Carman played another great game with 12 digs and eight kills.
- Jennings led the Scots in digs once again with 17.
- Mathis posted six kills and five total blocks.
- After the match, Carman and Sandhoff were named to the All-Tournament Team while Mathis won Tournament MVP for the second year in a row.
UP NEXT: Covenant will see where it lands in the NCAA Division III National Tournament bracket when it is released on Monday afternoon.
