Scots Win On Senior Day; Move Up To First Place

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - It was Senior Day at Scotland Yard, but the Scots couldn't let the celebrations distract them from a massive game with Asbury. With the help of an early goal, Covenant earned the 1-0 win and jumped ahead of Asbury for first place in the CCS standings.

Final: Covenant 1, Asbury 0
Records: Covenant (10-2-3, 3-0-2 CCS), Asbury (8-4-2, 3-2 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The winning goal came in the seventh minute on a free kick from Kade Theunissen that found Whitt Tisdale who headed it into the back of the net.
  • Asbury earned three corner kicks across 20 minutes, but the Covenant defense didn't allow it to get a good look on goal.
  • Jackson Bostrom fired a shot from deep in the 44th minute for the Scots, but it missed high.
  • At the break, Asbury had outshot Covenant 7-5.
  • Covenant keeper Will Hicks made his first save of the second half in the 52nd minute in the bottom center of his goal.
  • Tyler Johnson nearly gave the Scots a 2-0 lead in the 81st minute, however his scissor kick shot rattled off the crossbar.
  • Three minutes later, Theunissen forced the Asbury keeper into a save at the bottom left of the goal as he searched for a Senior Day goal.
  • With less than 60 seconds remaining, the Eagles created an opportunity inside the box after a Covenant miscue, however the Scots defense recovered before Asbury could pounce on the mistake.

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 10-3 all-time against Asbury.
  • The Eagles outshot the Scots 11-9 and had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Hicks tallied four saves in the shutout.
  • The foul count was 13-9 Covenant.
