ATLANTA, Ga. - The 2023 campaign for Men's Soccer began with an afternoon tilt on the road at Emory. The Scots defense shined in a 0-0 draw against the Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Kade Theunissen had two opportunities for the Scots in the first six minutes, but the Eagles goalkeeper saved both of his shots on goal.
- Covenant was saved by the woodwork in the 25th minute and right before halftime in the 44th minute on an open header.
- At the intermission, Emory outshot Covenant 8-2, but the match was still scoreless.
- The Eagles controlled most of the possession in the second period, but the Scots defenders stood tall when the ball entered the box.
- Covenant had a couple chances on the counter attack, but the final pass was missing for the Scots throughout the afternoon.
- In the 79th minute, Joe Beare for Emory lined up an open shot from just outside the box, but the shot went wide.
- In the 85th minute, Covenant went a man up as Lorenzo Avalos was assessed a red card for Emory.
- Theunissen cut inside in the 89th minute to try and find the late winner, but his shot was right at the goalkeeper.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 3-8-8 all-time against Emory
- This is the third consecutive tie in the series, all of which were season openers.
- The Eagles outshot the Scots 13 to three, but only had two shots on goal.
- Emory had eight corner kicks while Covenant did not have any.
- The Eagles committed 14 fouls and the Scots issued 11 fouls.
- Eli Honeycutt now has seven clean sheets in 12 career starts in goal.
UP NEXT: Covenant will take on Oglethorpe in a neutral site game at Emory tomorrow afternoon. The match is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start.
