COLUMBUS, Ohio. - Covenant took on its first nationally ranked opponent of the year in No. 23 Illinois College in the Smokey Ballenger Classic. The Scots went into halftime tied with the Blueboys, but were overmatched in the second half, as they were defeated 75-56.

FIRST HALF:
- Logan Pearlman made a triple for the first basket of the game that put Covenant ahead.
- Luke Crowden hit Covenant's second 3-pointer of the night which sparked an 8-0 run to give it a 15-7 lead.
- Fisher Mitchell got in on the 3-pointer fun with 12:13 remaining to put the Covenant lead at 18-8.
- The Scots went scoreless for just over four minutes before Jonathan Gernatt made a 3-pointer to keep the Scots in front 21-12.
- Illinois crept its way back into the game as a 6-0 run cut the Covenant lead to one point with 2:27 remaining.
- In the final minute of the half, Gus Hood knocked down a jumper for Covenant and Illinois got a layup to go as the two teams were tied at 31.
SECOND HALF:
- Across the first five minutes out of halftime, the Blueboys went on a 15-2 run to take a 46-33 lead.
- Michael St. Germain got a basket in transition before Hood made a triple to cut the Illinois lead back to single digits at 46-38.
- Back-to-back 3-pointers for the Blueboys put them ahead by 15 points with 10:34 remaining.
- Jesse Kinard found some offensive rhythm with a made jumper and 3-pointer, but Covenant still trailed 67-52.
- A couple of fast break buckets for Illinois, put the game out of reach at 71-52 with 4:50 left in the game.
- Hoods' second triple of the game was Covenant's final made basket of the evening as they fell 75-56.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant drops to 0-1 all-time against Illinois College.
- Gernatt led Covenant with 11 points and seven rebounds.
- Colt Donley scored a career-high nine points.
- Covenant was 32.8% (20-61) shooting while Illinois was 46.9% (30-64) from the field.
- Illinois was more effective inside with 36 points in the paint to Covenant's 16 points.
- Covenant made 11 3-pointers and Illinois made eight.
