No. 24 Covenant Crowned CCS Tournament Champions

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - With the CCS Championship on the line, No. 24 Covenant hosted Maryville inside Barnes P.E. Center. In front of an excited crowd, Covenant won in a sweep to be crowned Tournament Champions for the second consecutive season. 

Final: No. 24 Covenant 3, Maryville 0 
Records: No. 24 Covenant (34-2, 16-0 CCS), Maryville (18-17, 11-5 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Reese Bailey had two kills in the early goings for Maryville to give it a 5-2 lead in set one. 
  • Kills by Addie Smith and a service ace from Ally Sokolow pushed Maryville's lead to 12-8. 
  • Covenant rode a 13-1 run to take a commanding 20-13 lead. Despite two timeouts from Maryville, it could not get Emma Kalbfleisch off her serving rotation. 
  • Kalbfleisch had kills for Covenant on point 24 and point 25 to give her team the set 25-19. 
  • Bartlett went on the attack for Covenant and got a kill for Covenant to give it a 4-2 lead in set two. 
  • A 5-0 run for Covenant on Kyla Bailey's service rotation extended its lead to 13-7. 
  • With a couple of kills from K. Bailey and a service ace by Sarah Jennings, Covenant was on the brink of winning the second set with a 23-11 advantage, 
  • Two errors from Maryville closed the set at 25-12.
  • Two kills by Cali Sandhoff pushed Covenant ahead 9-8 in set three. 
  • The two teams went back-and-forth as Hannah Kammer put Maryville within one point at 17-16 with a kill. 
  • A service ace from Sandhoff capped off a 5-0 run for Covenant to put them ahead for good at 23-17. 
  • An attack error from Maryville ended the set at 25-19 and officially gave the trophy to Covenant. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 16-31 all-time against Maryville.  
  • After the game, Bartlett and Kalbfleisch were named to the CCS All-Tournament Team while Hannah Haerer was named Tournament MVP.
  • Haerer posted 11 kills and five total blocks which was a team-high in both categories.
  • Kalbfleisch recorded her second consecutive double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. .
  • Bartlett dished out 34 assists while Jennings tallied 18 digs. 

UP NEXT: Covenant will be tuned in on Monday to the NCAA Division III Tournament Selection Show on Monday to find out if it will continue its historic season.
