Covenant Drops CCS Match at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. - Covenant took its unbeaten conference record to Belhaven on Saturday after a week off of play. The Scots couldn't continue their winning ways as they fell in a close 1-0 match on the road. 

Final: Covenant 0, Belhaven 1
Records: Covenant (6-4-3, 2-1-0 CCS), Belhaven (5-2-4, 2-0-1 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Zach Moir had Covenant's first shot on goal in the 18th minute, which was saved in the bottom right of the goal. 
  • In the next 10 minutes, the Scots had three corner kicks, but could not capitalize on any of the opportunities. 
  • In the final minute of the first half, Belhaven had a shot on goal that was saved by Eli Honeycutt. 
  • At the intermission, the Scots had outshot the Blazers 7-5.
  • Knox Gibson and Kate Theunissen each had shots saved in the first 15 minutes of the second half. 
  • Belhaven scored what would be the winning goal in the 65th minute as Lex Rogers found the end of a well-executed corner kick. 
  • A handball inside the box for Belhaven in the 75th minute gave the Scots a chance to tie the match, but Theunissen's penalty kick was saved by the Belhaven keeper. 
  • Gibson and Tyler Swinehart each forced saves out of the Blazers goalie in the 82nd and 83rd minute, however Covenant couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant drops 3-5-4 all-time against Belhaven.
  • The Scots outshot the Blazers 17-9.
  • Covenant had 16 corner kicks while Belhaven had three.
  • Belhaven had a higher foul count at 20-13.

UP NEXT: Covenant welcomes Maryville to campus on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Prior to the game, the Scots will recognize their four seniors.
