BEREA, Ky. - Going into the final day of the regular season, Covenant needed to beat Berea on the road and get some help from Piedmont to win the CCS Regular Season Championship. With Piedmont beating Belhaven earlier in the day, the Scots moved up to first place in the standings after earning a 1-0 win over the Mountaineers.
Final: Covenant 1, Berea 0
Records: Covenant (8-5-3, 4-2-0 CCS), Berea (6-10-1, 3-3-0 CCS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Whitt Tisdale was on the attack less than a minute into the game with a shot on goal that was saved.
- In the 18th minute, Kade Theunissen put a shot on net that was saved while Fox Landgren did the same thing in the 21st minute.
- Ty Morgan scored what would be the game winner in the 33rd minute with a left-footed strike from outside the box.
- Covenant had its second and final corner kick of the half in the 36th minute, but couldn't convert on the set piece.
- At the intermission, Covenant had outshot Berea 10-3.
- The Scots went a man up in the 56th minute as Jean Paul Nunez was assessed a red card for Berea.
- Right after the red card, Covenant had two shots from Whitt Tisdale and Theunissen, but neither found the back of the net.
- The Scots continued to look for the second goal with four shots within a span of three minutes late in the game.
- Berea had a long range effort in the final minute, but Covenant goalie Eli Honeycutt saw it miss high to the right.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 11-1-0 all-time against Berea.
- The Scots outshot the Mountaineers 20-8 with the Mountaineers only having two shots on target.
- Corner kicks were in favor of Covenant 4-1.
- Each team had three yellow cards while Berea had one red card.
UP NEXT: Covenant will host the winner of Berea and LaGrange in the CCS Semifinals on Oct. 28. Time is to be determined.
