Men's Soccer Nets Five Goals Against Piedmont

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - For its final regular season match at Scotland Yard, Covenant battled Piedmont. Despite going down a goal in the first half, the Scots came storming back to earn a convincing win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Scots had a few early chances in the game including a breakaway from Whitt Tisdale where his shot went just wide of the goal. 
  • Colin Vogel took advantage of a defensive mishap from the Scots to give the Lions the lead in the 24th minute. 
  • Blake Myers tied the match just a few minutes later, slotting home a goal after a give-and-go with Tisdale.
  • Tyler Johnson gave the Scots the lead in the 39th minute as he found the end of a teasing cross from Ty Morgan on the left wing. 
  • At the break, Covenant had outshot Piedmont 13-5.
  • Kade Thuenissen had two shots and Knox Gibson and Luke Laughlin each had shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but none found the back of the net. 
  • The Scots went a man up in the 65th minute as Nathan Jacome for Piedmont picked up his second yellow card of the match after a wreckless tackle. 
  • Zachary Moir scored Covenant's third goal with a left-footed shot from just outside the box that was assisted on the counter attack by Johnson. 
  • Piedmont immediately responded as Phillip Nowak tapped in a goal after an Eli Honeycutt save fell right to him in front of the net. 
  • In the 76th minute, Gibson froze the goalie with a shot at his near post that found the back of the net off a pass from Tisdale. 
  • Laughlin netted Covenant's fifth and final goal in the 80th minute with a well-placed shot after cutting inside onto his left foot. Theunissen had the assist for the goal. 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant moves to 19-1-1 all-time against Piedmont.
  • Shots were in favor of Covenant, 27-12.
  • Covenant had 10 corner kicks while Piedmont had just one.
  • The Scots had a higher foul count at 13-10.
  • Covenant currently sits in a tie for second place in the CCS standings.

UP NEXT: Covenant travels to Berea, who it is tied with in the conference, on Saturday for its final regular season match. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
