Tonight (Sept. 6), Covenant Women's Soccer outlasted Birmingham Southern after a 45-minute game delay due to storms within the region.
Though off to a later start and under less than ideal playing conditions, both teams gave an all-out effort, keeping the game competitive for the entire duration of the contest. The first half remained scoreless and was a back-and-forth affair between the Scots and the Panthers. Covenant only put up one more shot than BSC in the period.
However, it was in the second half of the game when the Scots became alive and began firing away, out-shooting BSC 17-6 in the end. The Scots only allowed two more shots from the Panthers, both shots past the 70:00-minute mark. Covenant not only held off BSC from shooting, but also put immense pressure on their defense for the entire second half.
The pressure was just too much to bear for the Panthers. As shot after shot came for goalkeeper Grace Elsevier, the ball launched by
Mae Pierce high and deep to the corner of the net could not be stopped. Pierce's goal was assisted by
Lillie Cate and
Leah Marr in the 77
th minute.
Though BSC fought hard to get even with the Scots, Covenant's defense held their position to win the match-up against the Panthers 1-0. This was
Lucy Sandhoff's first shut-out of the season, and the Scots' second win (2-0-1).
After a 3-1 win against Asbury on the road this past Saturday, September 3
rd, Covenant was ready to play on their home turf tonight.
In the win over the Asbury Eagles last week,
Tyneisha Herring bagged two goals for the Scots, the first assisted by
Aiden Strawbridge and the second,
Mae Pierce. Pierce also added one goal in the defeat. Both teams took double-digit shots against the other, the Scots putting up just three more shots than the Eagles.
After Herring put Covenant on the board early with her first goal, Pierce added some insurance late in the first half with her goal. The Scots scored their final goal in the 52
nd minute before Sydney Tucker had the chance to score within the last ten minutes of the contest, making the score 3-1.
Lucy Sandhoff registered seven saves, while Asbury's Maliya Crump registered 8 saves on the match.
Though Covenant soared past the Eagles and shut-out the Panthers, the Scots suffered a loss on their first game of the season to Sewanee, 0-1.
Sewanee's Caroline Pulliam (So.) scored the only goal of the match in the 49
th minute and Sandhoff was able to save 14 of the 15 shots she faced from the opposing team. However, Covenant could not get anything going offensively, as they were unable to put up any shots against the Tigers.
