Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Powers Past Spalding at Maryville Fall Classic, Ties with Transy

This weekend (Sept. 9/10), Covenant Women's Soccer faced two teams that they have had very little history with in recent years. In fact, Duble's current squad has never seen either team during their time playing for Covenant.

The last time the Scots and the Pioneers competed was in 2017, and even further back was Covenant's match-up with Spalding, which occurred in 2004. With not having any recent competition against either team, Covenant was prepared for anything.

During their face off against the Transylvania Pioneers, the Scots quickly found themselves in a hole that took them a while to recover from. Isabella White from the opposing side set the Pioneers ahead with her early goal. Scoring before the 4-minute mark, Covenant was playing catch-up for the entire first half.

Luckily, the Scots regained composure in the second half of the contest. Tyneisha Herring persistently attacked the Pioneer's defense and it proved to be fruitful. After taking a shot but goalkeeper Morgan Patton blocking Herring's first attempt, it was Herring's aggressiveness towards regaining control of the blocked shot that allowed for a Scots' goal. Tyneisha Herring's goal at 62:27 brought the score to an even 1-1.

Both teams fought to keep the other from scoring again to take the lead, as each team remained scoreless for the rest of the match, bringing the contest to a close in a tie.

Lucy Sandhoff registered six saves throughout the competition, while Patton registered three for Transy.

The Scots' second match of the Maryville Fall Classic proved to be more favorable for Covenant. With a 3-1 win over Spalding, the Scots advance to 3-1-1 on the season.

Covenant out-shot the Golden Eagles 20-6 with 12 shots on goal. The consistent pressure from the Scots' offense was too much for their opponent to bear, as Mae Pierce landed a shot just over fifteen minutes into the first half.

Pierce seized the perfect opportunity that Nikki Shirley carved out for her. Shirley relentless battled for the ball one on one against a Spalding defender, only to get knocked to the ground. No foul was called and Shirley wasted no time getting back on her feet to continue the offensive pressure. On a steal from a back pass forced by Shirley, Mae Peirce was given a wide-open net for Covenant's first goal of the night.

The second and third goals for the Scots came from Anna Dolan and Leah Marr, respectively. Marr's goal came from a penalty kick.

Spalding was able to get one on the Scots with a goal from Ella Trentman.

Come out to Scotland Yard 7:00 PM Tuesday night (Sept. 13) to watch your Lady Scots in action against the Berry Vikings.
