Scots Sweep Bruins on Senior Day

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team earned a Senior Day sweep against visiting Bob Jones on Saturday afternoon. Covenant took game one, 4-2, before completing the three-game sweep with a 7-5, comeback, win in the finale.

The Scots honored eight seniors -- Aaron Northcutt, Ken Burke, Trevor Grapenthin, Conor Austin, Josh Harvey, Tyler Cox, McKaleb Harlemon, and Tristen Green -- between the games.

Covenant (18-17) has won eight of its last 10 games heading into the final series of the year at Berea next weekend.

GAME ONE: Covenant 4, Bob Jones 2

The Scots recorded eight total hits in game one to garner the 4-2 victory.

After the Bruins gained a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a bases-loaded single from Isaiah Brandt, Covenant responded in the third with two runs of their own.

With runners on second and third, Cox would double, scoring both runs and giving the Scots a 2-1 lead.

Covenant then tacked on another run in the fifth, thanks to three hits. Cox and Zeke Gilbert both recorded doubles during the rally, making it 3-1 in favor of the Scots.

An RBI groundout off the bat of Chad Bayne put another run on the board for the Bruins in the top of the sixth (3-2). But, a sacrifice fly from Gilbert quickly extended the lead back to two in Covenant's half of the inning (4-2).

Closing pitcher Austin then made quick work of Bob Jones in the seventh, tallying two strikeouts and sealing the Scots' 4-2 win.

Cox finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Gilbert was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Starting pitcher Zach Tolleson (2-2) recorded the win after throwing six innings and striking out three. Austin notched his third save of the year.

Brandt went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Conley Burk was a perfect 2-of-2 with a double. Joshua Legnard (2-4) started on the mound for the Bruins and was handed the loss after recording three earned runs, three strikeouts, and three walks in five innings pitched.

GAME TWO: Covenant 7, Bob Jones 5

The Scots overcame a three-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth thanks to six runs and a three-run homer from Kenny Mills to gain the 7-5 victory.

Covenant added one to the board in the bottom of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. After Grapenthin doubled, he was brought around to score thanks to a sacrifice fly from Mills.

The Bruins were held hitless until the fourth inning, but would then score four over back-to-back innings to help them take a three-run lead.

In the top of the fourth, three hits and a Covenant error would give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. And after holding the Scots scoreless in the bottom of the inning, Bob Jones would tack on another two scores in the top of the fifth thanks to a triple off the bat of Bayne and a single from Brandt (4-1).

But Covenant was not to go quietly, as they would rally for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take back the lead.

The scoring began when a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Joseph Ridenour made it 4-2. Then, with runners still on second and third, Mills would launch his eighth homer of the season and give the Scots a 5-4 lead.

Pinch hitter Chris Savage then doubled, extending the lead to two (6-4). And a wild pitch would later bring in Covenant's seventh run of the contest, making it 7-4 heading into the final inning.

Bob Jones would threaten in the top of the seventh, connecting on three hits and scoring one. But the Scots' defense would turn a double play to end the inning, earning the 7-5 win.

Grapenthin finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Mills went 1-for-2 with four RBIs. Judah O'Neal got the start at pitcher for the Scots, pitching four innings with zero earned runs, zero walks, and three strikeouts. Northcutt picked up the win (1-4), and Houghston Schaefer earned his first save of the season.

Bayne was 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two. Ethan Rogers (0-1) received the loss after 1.2 innings of relief.
